Northwest Photography

Each spring the Skagit Valley shifts into extraordinary color as fields of daffodils and tulips bloom beneath the open skies of northwest Washington. It’s one of my favorite times of year to photograph locally, especially in the soft light of early morning and evening.
This collection includes broad views of the flower fields, rows of color stretching toward the horizon, intimate studies of individual blooms, and quieter moments shaped by weather, depth, and changing light. I’m especially drawn to the contrast between the intensely cultivated fields and the surrounding farmland, mountains, and spring skies.
The character of the valley changes quickly through the season, from the first yellow daffodils in March to the peak tulip displays in April.

Snow Lake is one of Washington’s busiest alpine hikes, but beyond the crowds it remains a remarkably beautiful place to photograph. The trail climbs from the Alpental area into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, eventually opening onto a deep mountain basin surrounded by steep granite walls, forest, and clear blue water.
I’ve photographed Snow Lake in very different conditions—from calm reflections and summer light to fresh snow, low clouds, and dramatic breaks in the weather. Early and late in the day, especially when the trail quiets down, the lake can feel completely different from the busy daytime experience.
This collection includes views of Snow Lake itself, the surrounding peaks, reflections, changing weather, seasonal snow, and scenes encountered along the approach.

Sol Duc is one of the places in Olympic National Park where the walk is as rewarding as the destination. The trail winds through dense temperate rain forest, past moss-covered trees, ferns, small creeks, and flowing water before reaching Sol Duc Falls.
I’ve returned to photograph both the falls and the quieter scenes around them—the patterns of water over rock, filtered forest light, intimate fern studies, and the deep greens of the surrounding woods. Soft overcast conditions are especially good here, bringing out the texture and color without overwhelming the scene.
This collection includes photographs of Sol Duc Falls, the Sol Duc River, forest trails, creeks, ferns, and other details from the surrounding Olympic Peninsula forest.

The Hoh Rain Forest on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula is one of my favorite places to photograph the quieter side of the Pacific Northwest. Moss-covered trees, ferns, fallen logs, and soft filtered light create an endlessly changing landscape beneath the old-growth canopy.
I’m especially drawn to the smaller scenes here—the rhythm of tree trunks, layers of green, moss-covered forest floors, and the subtle light that appears when clouds and rain soften the woods. These photographs are less about grand vistas and more about the atmosphere and structure of the forest itself.

Water is everywhere in the Pacific Northwest—dropping through forested waterfalls, tumbling over moss-covered rocks, and winding through small creeks beneath old-growth trees. I’ve spent years photographing these quieter places throughout Washington and the Northwest, often following trails simply to see what the water and light are doing that day.
This collection includes waterfalls, mountain streams, forest creeks, cascades, and intimate studies of moving water. I’m especially drawn to soft light, rich forest color, and the patterns created as water moves through rock, roots, moss, and fallen timber.
Some of these are well-known waterfalls; many are simply small places encountered along the trail that become extraordinary under the right conditions.

Horseshoe Lake is one of the quieter, harder-earned places I return to in the mountains near the Enchantments. Reaching it involves leaving the well-traveled routes behind and working through a steep final climb where the “trail” becomes more suggestion than path.
The payoff is a secluded alpine basin surrounded by granite, larches, and views toward the Stuart Range. In autumn the landscape changes completely as the larches turn gold, especially when evening light, reflections, and early snow arrive together.

Cannon Beach is one of the Oregon Coast locations I return to again and again, especially when sunset and low tide come together. Haystack Rock is the obvious landmark, but what keeps drawing me back is the way the entire beach changes with the tide, weather, reflections, and evening light.
This collection includes photographs of Haystack Rock, the surrounding sea stacks, broad stretches of wet sand, tide pools, surf, and the quieter coastal landscapes north and south of town. At low tide, the beach becomes an enormous reflective surface, often turning even a familiar view into something completely different.
I’m particularly drawn to the transition from sunset into blue hour, when the color softens and the reflections become more subtle.

Lake Colchuck is one of the great alpine landscapes of Washington’s Central Cascades and, for me, the beginning of the journey into the Enchantments. I’ve returned many times to photograph the lake in changing light, weather, seasons, and reflections beneath the granite walls of Dragontail Peak and Colchuck Peak.
The character of the lake can change completely from one visit to the next—still reflections at dawn, clouds pouring over the peaks, autumn larches glowing above the water, fresh snow on the surrounding mountains, or evening light fading across the basin.
Colchuck is also the approach to Aasgard Pass and the Upper Enchantments, so many of these photographs are part of longer trips through the entire basin. This collection includes views from the shoreline, the surrounding trails, and higher perspectives looking back across the lake.

The Enchantments are the place I return to every year and one of my favorite landscapes to photograph anywhere. I’ve camped in the Core many times, hiking through granite basins, alpine lakes, mountain passes, and forests of larch as the light and weather continually reshape the landscape.
Autumn is especially remarkable, when the alpine larches turn brilliant gold against pale granite, blue water, and the first snow of the season. This collection includes photographs from Lake Perfection, Inspiration Lake, Leprechaun Lake, Lake Viviane, Aasgard Pass, Prusik Peak, the Upper and Lower Enchantments, and the trails connecting them.
Because I’ve returned so often, the archive goes well beyond the familiar views—quiet tarns, changing weather, mountain goats, reflections, fresh snow, sunrise and sunset light, and small moments encountered along the trail.
