Flowers are one of the subjects I return to throughout the year, drawn as much to their color and atmosphere as to the flowers themselves. I often work with shallow depth of field, selective focus, and soft natural light, allowing backgrounds to dissolve into color while a small part of the flower remains sharply defined.
Roses, dahlias, tulips, blossoms, and the changing plants of each season all offer something different. Many of these photographs were made with fast prime lenses and close-focus techniques, with the goal of creating something more painterly than documentary.
This collection brings together my flower and garden photography from Seattle and the Pacific Northwest as well as travels farther afield.
