Flower Photography

Roses are one of the subjects I return to every summer, especially at the Woodland Park Rose Garden in Seattle when the garden reaches its peak in June and early July. The variety of color, shape, and texture gives me endless opportunities to work with soft natural light, selective focus, and shallow depth of field.
I’m less interested in simply documenting a perfect bloom than in finding the mood around it—the way petals catch evening light, how neighboring flowers dissolve into color, and how a fast prime lens can turn a busy garden into something quiet and intimate.

Dahlias are one of my favorite subjects to photograph, especially in late summer when their extraordinary range of color, shape, and layered petals fills the garden. From tightly structured blooms to loose, almost painterly forms, there is always something new to find.
I often photograph dahlias in soft natural light using selective focus and shallow depth of field, allowing surrounding flowers and foliage to dissolve into color while a small part of the bloom remains sharply defined. Tulips are one of the subjects I look forward to every spring, from intimate flower studies to the broad fields of color in Washington’s Skagit Valley. The annual tulip season offers everything from single blooms in soft light to long rows of flowers stretching toward the horizon.

The Volunteer Park Conservatory in Seattle is where some of my earliest flower photography was made, and these images reach back to the beginning of a floral archive I’ve continued building for many years.
The conservatory is especially rewarding on Seattle’s gray and rainy days, when the glasshouse fills with soft, diffused light. Tropical foliage, orchids, bromeliads, palms, succulents, and other unusual plants offer endless opportunities for close studies of color, form, texture, and shallow depth of field.

Crocuses are among the first flowers to appear each spring, often pushing through cold ground while the garden is still mostly dormant. Their arrival feels like the first real sign that winter is beginning to loosen its grip.
I’m especially drawn to the purple varieties, which catch soft spring light beautifully and lend themselves to shallow depth of field and selective focus. Irises are among the first flowers to return after winter, bringing rich blues, purples, yellows, and whites into the garden as spring takes hold. Their sculptural petals and strong lines make them both beautiful and challenging subjects to photograph.
I especially enjoy working with Japanese irises, including a patch close to home that I return to each season.
